Catechism

The Ministry of Catechesis is led by Fr. Ani Xavier, the Parish Priest and is well organized by a core group of lay people that forms the Catechism committee.

The Catechism committee’s main responsibility is the Christian faith formation of the Parish children aged 6 to 14 years. The curriculum is approved by the office of Christian Formation, Vicariate Apostolic of Arabia.  The office of Christian Formation is headed by Fr. Francis Jamieson, Vicar General, Vicarate Apostolic of Arabia and Mrs. Catherine Miles-Flynn, Director of Catechism.

The St. Michael’s committee from the Laity is coordinated by Merwyn Patrao who is assisted by Benny Barretto, Leonard Misquitta, Tony D’souza, Josephine Coelho and Jessie D’souza. Forty five teachers sacrifice their Fridays to teach catechism to our children.

The medium of instruction is in English and Catechism is taught from September to May.  Catechism along with Children’s Mass is held on Friday and begins at 9:30 am and ends at noon. Attendance is monitored along with progress which is measured by two tests conducted in January and May.

The eight year olds are prepared for two important Sacraments, Reconciliation (celebrating the gift of Forgiveness) and Holy Eucharist (celebrating the gift of Jesus). First Holy Communion is celebrated in two batches in May.

Confirmation is a two year course taught to twelve and thirteen year olds. (A confirmation journey Part I & Part II).  Our Bishop Paul Hinder confirms the confirmandees usually on the weekend after Easter Sunday.

Registrations are accepted in September, but are open all year round for those who are new comers to Sharjah.  The prescribed text books are provided to the children.
